The Chief Executive Officer of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), Dr. (Mrs.) Sarah Bendu, has applauded the Nigerian Government and Management of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for the bilateral, moral and technical assistance the nation and the FRSC have rendered to her country for the development of road safety lead agency in Sierra Leone.
Bendu stated this on Monday while addressing members of the FRSC Management when she led a delegation of top management staff of Sierra Leone Road Safety Agency to understudy the FRSC structure and operations.
She expressed satisfaction with the level of support the Management of the FRSC has continued to render to Sierra Leone in terms of road safety, saying such support from FRSC has made the country an example to its neigbours in matters of road safety management.
According to her, when she led a delegation to the FRSC National Headquarters some years back to understudy the Corps’ operations and management, all members of the delegation were highly impressed by the Corps’ robust use of information technology for road traffic management.
The Sierra Leonean Head of Road Safety Agency added that from the initial impressions the delegation got from the FRSC, she resolved to replicate the same infrastructure in Sierra Leone which she has been doing conscientiously through regular consultations with the leadership of the Corp. She promised to continue to learn from the FRSC and develop to the level that is comparable to the heights attained by the FRSC.
“Within this short period that road safety authority was established in Sierra Leone, the people have come to accord it great respect and recognition, and I would work harder to achieve more. That is why we are here again,” she stated.
Bendu was full of commendation to Nigerians for the warm reception they continue to receive from them each time they came on visit, saying such spirits have boosted the brotherhood of the Africans as is being promoted through the Economic Community for West African States’ (ECOWAS) protocol on free movement of people and goods within the sub-region with the West African Road Safety Organisation (WARSO) as a veritable platform.
In his remarks, the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, commended Bendu for her sustained interest in entrenching a functional road safety lead agency in her country, promising that FRSC will not fail to render necessary support to her for the realization of her dreams. Oyeyemi further recalled that as part of the technical support by the FRSC to Sierra Leone, he had earlier led a team to visit the country towards setting up the road safety agency, adding that Federal Government had equally, as part of the bilateral assistance to the country approved the posting of some FRSC officers to assist the country in the setting up of its Road Safety Agency, but for the outbreak of Ebola disease, which delayed the movement.
The Corps Marshal assured that with the Ebola crisis being tackled, he was confident that there would be another move towards that direction. He expressed satisfaction with the commitment being shown by the people of Sierra Leone and the political will demonstrated by the government of the country in setting up and developing a functional road safety agency for the country. The Corps Marshal assured the delegation that FRSC will, as usual, open its doors to them in its determination to share road safety knowledge it had acquired over the years with the country.
The FRSC Boss further stressed that supporting other African countries to set up their own road safety agencies falls within the corporate social responsibility and principles of sharing road safety which FRSC has been promoting over the years, adding that making African roads safe is a shared responsibility of all.
As part of the one week activities of members of the delegation, they are expected to visit all the department and Corps Offices of the FRSC at the National Headquarters as directed by the Corps Marshal for their heads to share experiences as well as respond to whatever questions that could enhance the understanding of the Management, operations and structure of the FRSC for the overall success of their studies.
