The PAN Learning Centre (PLC), the training arm of PAN Nigeria, assemblers of Peugeot vehicles in the country, on Tuesday , graduated 80 trainees of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Technical Skill Acquisition Programme (TSAP) Batch B, at an elaborated ceremony attended by the UNDP Country Representative for Nigeria, Ms Khardiata Lo Ndiaye, at the PAN Learning Centre Body Works (BW) facility in Kaduna .
Speaking at the ceremony, MD/CEO PAN, Ibrahim Boyi, noted that over 45,000 capacity job gap exists in the automobile after- sales, repairs and services value chain, requiring skills and competent modern auto mechanics with knowledge of technological trend in the auto industry. He described the graduating trainees as fortunate, saying, “This is a unique opportunity for you because out of 750 that UNDP identified, you are among the chosen few. Make good use of it.”
Boyi maintained that the programme was well structured, and much targeted at the youths for training in auto mechanics, auto mechatronics, auto spraying, welding and panel beating as the programme is also crowned with the City & Guilds Certifications.
It is also accompanied with standard knowledge of fault finding in modern vehicles, and consciousness in environmental protection to prevent environmental pollution through standard oil removal, as advocated by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) for ideal standard requirement in training world class technicians and mechanics.
Amongst the graduands are 20 ladies, also trained in auto mechanics, auto mechatronics, panel beating, welding and spray painting.
In her remarks at the ceremony, the Director General, PAN Learning Centre, Mrs Elizabeth Mordi, said “The institute is committed to equal opportunity and gender equality,” as she stressed that “the trainees went through compulsory ICT training to Diploma level as well as Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) accredited PAN Driving School for Defensive Driving Skill.”
She added that the PAN Learning Centre is also promoting the empowerment of young women and has trained over 300 in the past years.
On her part, the UNDP Country Representative, Ms Khardiata LO Ndiaye, expressed gratitude to the Norwegian Government for its continuous support to UNDP programme in Nigeria even as she applauded the management and staff of PAN Learning Centre for their dedication, commitment and understanding to transform the lives of “these young persons through impacting skills and knowledge in them and make them useful to the society.”
The event featured the award of certificates, tools and equipment to the trainees as well as a guided tour of the Training Centre by the UNDP Country Representative.
