As the maiden KIA South Africa national beach tennis championship is set to hold this weekend at the Badplaas Forever Resort in Mpumalanga, the organisers have released a list of eight men and women doubles teams ready to slug it out for the national title, with the winners continuing to the World Team Championships, set to take place in Russia, as South Africa’s representatives in July.
Recall that over 130 beach tennis players participated in the regional qualifying events across four provinces to book their places in the inaugural event.
Qualifying events took place over the past two weekends at St. Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape, North Beach in KwaZulu-Natal, and Camps Bay in the Western Cape, with the last event in Gauteng hosted at the Pretoria Country Club last Sunday.
Some of the notable players who took part in the events include Lynn Kiro, former South African no. 2 ranked junior girls tennis ace, Jackie Booth, Seniors Individual Silver medallist in 45+ age group, Lucinda Gibbs, former Fed Cup member and professional player, and Michael de Jongh, former professional tennis player and coach of Amanda Coetzer.
Frans Ledwaba, Ryan Brookshaw, Helga Jeske and Kyla Yelverton, all members of last year’s team who represented South Africa in the ITF World Team Championships in Russia were also in the mix.
