Global first for Land Rover at Wheelchair Rugby World Championships

Land Rover has further strengthened its commitment to international rugby with a world-first sponsorship agreement. The Rugby World Cup 2019 Worldwide Partner is now a major sponsor of the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships too – the first time a backer has supported both tournaments.

The new deal began at the 2018 GIO IWRF Wheelchair Rugby World Championships in Australia, where Japan beat the hosts in the gold medal match at the Olympic Park in Sydney. It was the largest elite sporting event for athletes with a disability to be held in the city since the 2000 Paralympic Games, with teams from Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden and the USA also competing.

Laura Wood, Land Rover Head of Global Brand and Partnerships, said: “Land Rover has supported rugby globally for many years and so it is fitting that we are the first company to be a Worldwide Partner of both these pinnacle events.”

Brett Gosper, Chief Executive Officer of World Rugby, said: “It is fantastic that Land Rover, a long-standing and proactive supporter of rugby globally and a Rugby World Cup Worldwide Partner, has extended its support to the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships. World Rugby and the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation share a close and strong association and this deal reflects our wider commitment to furthering the bond between all forms of rugby.”

Steve Loader, Chairman of the 2018 WRWC organising committee, is pleased to fulfil his goal of obtaining a partner link between the two peak Rugby events. He said: “Land Rover’s support has enabled the 2018 WRWC to showcase our event and highlights Land Rover’s worldwide support of rugby including the Rugby World Cup in 2019.”

Land Rover’s backing for international rugby also includes the Women’s World Cup and the Under-20 Championships. Additionally Jaguar Land Rover is the presenting partner of the Invictus Games for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans in Sydney in October 2018.
