FRSC busts child trafficking syndicate in Kaduna

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said it has busted a child trafficking syndicate operating in the northern part of Nigeria. The Corps said its operatives in the Kaduna Sector Command busted the syndicate during a routine check on a vehicle impounded for overloading and broken windscreen, which actually had suspected child traffickers with minors heading to unknown destination.

Head, Media Relations and Strategy of the Corps, Bisi Kazeem, said in a statement that the vehicle, a Ford Galaxy model with registration number LMU 76 XA, and ash in colour was travelling from Kano to undisclosed location at about 1155hrs on April 27, when the patrol team on Kaduna flagged down the driver, who refused to stop, but was chased to the Dutsenma junction.

The statement said on close inspection, 17 minors and three adults, totalling 20 persons, were loaded in the vehicle with capacity for only nine persons .

Kazeem stated that the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, had directed that the case be reported to the Comptroller of Immigration Kaduna State, who immediately sent his personnel to take away the Vehicle and its occupants for further investigation . On getting to Kazeem said the  human trafficking unit of Immigration was also not satisfied with the driver’s explanation and thereafter, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons  (NAPTIP) office was called upon to intervene and the vehicle and its occupants were taken to the Kano office of NAPTIP for further investigation and necessary action.

The statement said  Oyeyemi who approved of the release of the vehicle to NAPTIP to serve as exhibit on their request, stressed the need for constant interagency collaboration to foster security of lives and properties in the country.
