HISTORIC: Volkswagen emerges world’s No. 1 automaker, surpasses Toyota’s record for 2016

Despite the emission scandal rocking its operations which led to the exit of its CEO, Martin Winterkorn, German automaker, Volkswagen, has displaced Japanese carmaker, Toyota, as the No.1 carmaker in the world, selling 10.31 million vehicles in 2016 than the 10.175 million vehicles reported on Monday by Toyota.

According to AP, Toyota had occupied the position for the past four years, though falling behind Detroit-based General Motors in 2011, when a quake and tsunami in northeastern Japan affected its production.

GM had been the No. 1 carmaker for more than seven decades until Toyota displaced it from that position in 2008.

AP reports that VW may eventually make history by holding on to that position if American auto giants, General Motors, which is expected to announce its report next week, falls below that figure.

According to AP, Toyota officials have been consistent in affirming that they are more interested in rolling out good cars than being the No. 1 carmaker, while VW had been eyeing the top position for quite some time .
