YULETIDE: FRSC PLANS SPECIAL PATROL IN OGUN

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ota, Ogun State is to embark on special patrol to reduce crashes in Ota and its environs during the yuletide.

The Unit Commander of FRSC, Mr Leye Adegboyega, disclosed this in Ota.

He said that there was need to educate and enlighten road users on the necessity to take safety on the road as a serious business especially during the yuletide.

He said that the Special Patrol with the theme ”Operation Zero and Operation Sanity: Driving safely to 2016” would commence on Dec. 17.

“People ask why the FRSC always carries out aggressive ember patrol campaigns instead of daily campaign.

“In reality, aggressive public enlightenment are done every day, via television and radio stations, newspapers, billboards on the road and in the offices,” he said.

He said that what makes the ember patrol campaign more pronounced was the fact that the roads are busier and more dangerous during the period.

He added that crashes also tend to increase during the period due to recklessness and increased vehicular and human movements.

“For the umpteenth time, crashes are preventable even during the ember months regardless of any mythical spiritual perceptions,” he said.

Adegboyega said that human factors which included excessive speeding, drunk-driving, overloading, dangerous driving/overtaking contributed to about 80 per cent of all road crashes.

He said that the FRSC was collaborating with other traffic agencies to clear obstructions from the roads within Ota axis to ensure free flow of traffic.

“We hope to make the road very free from traffic and crashes even as the year ends.

“More importantly, there is need to change our attitude to safety on the roads,’’ he said.
