With national, state, or parliamentary elections scheduled to take place in 17 African countries throughout 2023, it will be a busy year for African politics. Currently, all eyes are on Nigeria’s presidential elections, occurring February 25, and state elections on March 11, as they will set the stage for analysis of future elections on the continent. What does this mean for Africa’s viewpoint on democracy in 2023?

The Wilson Centre Africa Program is therefore organising a series of media roundtable on major African elections starting with the Nigeria general elections scheduled to start this weekend.

Oge Onubogu, Africa Program Director, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, will be hosting the first media roundtable on the upcoming Nigerian elections and the current outlook of significant African elections through a forward-thinking lens via zoom on Thursday,  February 23, 2023  from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM (WAT).

Onubogu joins the Wilson Center as the former Director of the West Africa Program at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), where she led the strategic development and expansion of USIP’s portfolio in Nigeria and Coastal West Africa. Her expertise includes extensive experience on Africa and U.S-Africa relations, and governance support with agencies such as the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), as well as consulting on a range of governance and elections projects in Africa with the World Bank, Freedom House, and the Carter Center.

The Wilson Center provides a strictly nonpartisan space for the worlds of policymaking and scholarship to interact. By conducting relevant and timely research and promoting dialogue from all perspectives, it works to address the critical current and emerging challenges confronting the United States and the world.

The Wilson Center Africa Program works to address the most critical issues facing Africa and U.S.-Africa relations, build mutually beneficial U.S.-Africa relations, and enhance knowledge and understanding about Africa in the United States.
