Chairperson and Managing Director, Volkswagen Group Africa, Martina Biene, has revealed that Polo,  the popular Volkswagen model, assembled by Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA), under her leadership and  direction was the country’s most exported vehicle in 2023.

”Did you know that the Volkswagen Polo was South Africa’s  most exported vehicle in 2023?,”  Biene asked rhetorically, apparently with excitement, in a message, Tuesday,  to her team at VWSA , adding, ”I’m really proud of how hard the Volkswagen Group South  Africa and the Volkswagen Group Africa teams have worked in 2023.  The dedication, commitment and never-give-up attitude  has once again ensured that we are one of South Africa’s most loved vehicle brands. ”

According to Biene, “In 2023, we produced 140 430 vehicles at our Kariega manufacturing plant roughly 7 000 units more when compared to 2022, we exported a total of 101 557 Polos to global markets and with 23 904 units sold in the local market, the award-winning Polo Vivo was the best-selling passenger car in South Africa last year; a title it has held since launch in 2010. ”

She admitted that ”Results like these can only be attributed to a team who live our Values of Respect, Excellence, Integrity and OneTeam,” saying, ” Thank you to the VWSA team for a great 2023 – we can all be proud of this amazing result! Being the Chairperson and MD of VWSA, is truly an honour, because I lead some of the most dynamic and committed people in the automotive industry!”

On her plans for the new year, Biene said: “I am excited to work with each of you in 2024 as we continue to provide mobility and energy solutions in Africa for generations to come.”
