TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: FRSC RENEWS PARTNERSHIP WITH LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT

 The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Government have agreed to sustain their partnership on traffic management with a view to creating safer road environment in the state.

This is part of the resolutions reached at the interactive session between the Corps Marshal of FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi and the Lagos State Commissioner For Transportation, Dr. Ekundayo Mobereola, at the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

The Corps Marshal who made a presentation before the commencement of the formal interaction, drew the attention of participants to the challenges of traffic management in the country especially, Lagos state, saying Lagos state has the highest number of vehicular traffic in the country.

According to him, Lagos state remains a strategic state to the FRSC in its plans to ensure effective traffic management in the country as most of the traffic challenges facing other states can easily be resolved if that of Lagos are properly tackled. “Lagos accounts for the highest number of vehicular population in the country, and once we are able to tackle Lagos traffic effectively, others can easily be resolved,” he stated.

“That is why we have renewed our collaboration with the state after my last meeting with the Governor, and this interactive session is part of that continuing partnership.

“With our sustained collaboration with the state government, we would find last solutions to the traffic challenges of Lagos state and the country at large,” he further stated.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for transportation, Mobereola while welcoming participants to the meeting, commended the FRSC Corps Marshal for his renewed interest in Lagos traffic, expressing the willingness of the state government to partner with the Corps in the collective determination to tackle the traffic challenges facing the state being one of the mega cities in the country.

The Commissioner enumerated a number of challenges undermining effective traffic management in the state, noting that poor data management, effective enforcement of traffic laws; inadequate driver training and poor equipment are some of the problems that affect traffic management in the state.

 

He pledged the support of Lagos state government to the FRSC, saying such collaboration will improve the traffic management of the state.

 

“There is the need for collaboration with the FRSC to ensure comprehensive data analysis on traffic situation not only in Lagos state, but the entire West African sub-region if we must find last solutions to the traffic challenges we face in the state,” he stated.

 

At the end of the meeting, it was further resolved that FRSC and the Lagos state government should sustain the interaction on more regular basis and engage in regular consultations with other stakeholders to close the existing gap in data analysis. It was also agreed that greater synergy be maintained between the state and the FRSC to ensure sustainability of traffic policies to avoid the current public apathy on traffic laws.

 

Stakeholders who attended the meeting include the Permanent Secretary in the Lagos Ministry of Transportation, Sewedo Oluwaseyi, Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Motor Vehicle Administration at the FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja, Theophilus Charles and the Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Training, Standardisation and Certification, Kabir Lawal.

 

Others were the Chief Executive of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Motor Vehicle Administration of the state, Vehicle Inspection Officers and proprietors of Driving Schools among others. (FRSC NEWS)
