Ghanaian Minister for Trade and Industry , Alan John Kyerematen, last week, paid a working visit to the Volkswagen Ghana Assembly Facility in Accra, which is in its first phase.
The visit was to inspect progress being made at the Assembly Plant in furtherance of the agreement signed in August 2018 between the Government of Ghana and the Volkswagen Group.
Volkswagen was the first global automotive company to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ghana Ministry of Trade and Industry to establish a vehicle assembly plant in Ghana under the Ghana Automobile Manufacturing Development Programme .
The MoU was signed by Alan Kyerematen for Ghana while the Chairman/Managing Director, Volkswagen Group South Africa and Sub-Sahara Africa, Thomas Schaefer, signed for the Volkwagen Group, during the visit of the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to Ghana.
However, Schaefer, who could not be physically present during the inspection visit last week because of travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was able to join part of the tour of the facility via Skype.
Volkswagen has been selling its vehicles in Ghana for two decades, with Universal Motors Limited operating as its authorised representative since2005.
