Passengers on cancelled Lufthansa flights will not be able to get to the airport during the strike by ground staff planned for this Wednesday, the German airline said.

“Due to the strike, the rebooking counters are unfortunately not staffed,” the airline wrote on its website. Free rebooking options are available via lufthansa.com, the customer app and the service centre, it said.

Tickets for domestic German flights could be converted into vouchers for rail travel, the airline said.

Trade union Verdi called on Lufthansa’s ground staff to strike on Wednesday. Airports in Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Dusseldorf will be affected.

The strike is scheduled to begin at 4 am (0300 GMT) on Wednesday and last until 7:10 am on Thursday.

Lufthansa expects 80 to 90 percent of its flights scheduled for Wednesday to be cancelled and spoke of around 100,000 affected passengers.

The industrial action is in response to ongoing Lufthansa Group wage negotiations for the approximately 25,000 ground crew employees at Deutsche Lufthansa, Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo, among others.

An offer from the employers in the second round of negotiations on January 23 was rejected as the proposed pay increases were perceived as too low.

There have been widespread disruptions due to industrial action at German airports recently. On Thursday last week Verdi ordered security staff out on strike at several major airports.
