Spiro Expands into Nigeria, Bringing Innovative EV Motorbikes to Ogun State

Spiro, Africa’s largest electric vehicle (EV) player, has announced its expansion into Nigeria, introducing innovative electric bikes and advanced battery swapping technology in Ogun State. With more than 12,000 electric bikes already deployed across africa, and just four months after a presidential launch in Kenya, Spiro has arrived in Africa’s largest economy.

This strategic move is part of Spiro’s broader mission to foster sustainable transportation solutions across Africa, leveraging recent technological advancements and partnerships to drive growth and accessibility.

Pioneering Electric Mobility in Ogun State

Ogun State, in partnership with Spiro, is taking decisive steps to embrace electric mobility, starting with the deployment of Spiro’s innovative electric bikes. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability across the state. To ensure the adaptability of electric bikes to local conditions, comprehensive test drives have been conducted in Abeokuta, focusing on rough terrain. These efforts, coupled with a widespread sensitization campaign involving transport unions, commercial riders, and the Ministry of Transport, underline the commitment to a smooth transition to electric vehicles (EVs).
Strategic Deployment of Battery Swap Stations
To support the adoption of electric bikes, 13 swap stations have been established in pilot areas, with a goal to expand to 250 stations across Ogun State within six months. Spiro’s battery swapping model is designed to offer convenience and reliability, ensuring riders can easily exchange their depleted batteries for fully charged ones in a matter of seconds. This network of swap stations is pivotal in guaranteeing uninterrupted mobility for electric bike riders, making EVs a viable and attractive option for the state’s transportation ecosystem.
Enhanced EV Infrastructure with Automated Swap Stations
In a significant technological leap forward, Spiro is rolling out its latest automated battery swap stations in Nigeria. These state-of-the-art stations will offer a seamless, efficient experience for riders, allowing for quick battery exchanges that are both safe and reliable. This development represents a cornerstone of Spiro’s commitment to advancing EV technology and infrastructure, providing Ogun Province with access to the latest in green mobility solutions.
“We are immensely proud of Spiro transforming the landscape of sustainable transportation across Africa. Our recent launches of automated swap stations in Benin, Togo, and Kenya mark significant milestones in our journey to build a Pan-African Smart Energy Ecosystem, paving the way for cleaner, more efficient mobility solutions across the continent. The launch in Ogun State is particularly exhilarating, a first step in our ambitious plans to electrify Nigeria, Africa’s largest market. We have a collective vision to enhance the quality of life through sustainable transportation, making clean energy and sustainable transportation a reality for all Africans,” Kaushik Burman, CEO of Spiro, said.
Spiro Commando Bikes
The Spiro commando bikes, chosen for this transformative initiative, boast an impressive range of 70–80 kilometers per battery swap. By transitioning to electric bikes, it is anticipated that there will be a significant 30–40% reduction in operational expenses compared to traditional ICE bikes. Beyond the financial benefits, electric bikes offer the added advantages of being environmentally friendly and producing minimal noise pollution, contributing to the overall quality of life in Ogun State communities.
State of Charge (SoC) Energy Model and Pan-African Smart Energy Ecosystem
A key feature of Spiro’s expansion is the implementation of its State of Charge (SoC) energy model. This innovative approach ensures that the level of charge in each battery is monitored in real time, allowing riders to pay only for the energy they use. It also enables more effective charging strategies, reducing battery degradation. This model is integral to Spiro’s vision for a Pan-African Smart Energy Ecosystem, which aims to create a cohesive network of energy solutions that support sustainable transportation across the continent.
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainable Mobility
“Our automatic swap stations, paired with Spiro batteries, represent the pinnacle of safety and quality in the EV market” says Spiro CTO, Samir Mishra. “These stations are designed to offer our customers a seamless and secure experience, ensuring that every swap transparently conveys the exact value customers are paying for. The batteries are connected to the cloud around the clock make sure they meet the highest standards of performance and reliability. At Spiro, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of technology to provide solutions that are not only just innovative but also trustworthy, impactful and life changing, bringing smile to customers face by adding a bit more cash to their pocket each day. We are raising the bar for electric mobility across Africa.”
Government Endorsement
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with Spiro, stating, “We are excited about the multitude of benefits that electric bikes bring to our state, including improved sustainability, cost savings, and a healthier environment. This initiative marks a progressive step towards a greener future for Ogun State.”
This collaboration between Spiro and the Ogun State Government reflects a shared vision for a sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation system in Nigeria, setting a precedent for other states to follow.
