Speed Limiter: Brace-up for the new order, FRSC tells Nigerians

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, has advised the Nigerian motoring public to brace-up for the enforcement of the compulsory use of speed limiting device, saying a new date for its commencement would soon be announced.

The Corps Marshal disclosed that even though the FRSC in conjunction with the stakeholders took decision to commence compulsory enforcement of the use of the device from April 1, the enforcement was suspended following the intervention by the National Assembly which suspended the enforcement to enable its Committee on FRSC conduct public hearing to determine the desirability of the use of the device.

He however commended members of the National Assembly for their diligence in conducting the public hearing which he said has further shed more light on the necessity for use of the device as members of the public and stakeholders who participated in the public hearing canvassed more for the use of the device, which the committee validated through its recommendation which was adopted by members at the plenary session.

The Corps Marshal assured that as the lead agency for road safety management and administration in the country, FRSC was committed to measures that could address the challenges, noting that the decision by stakeholders to introduce the use of speed limiters in the country was to ensure that speed is involuntarily controlled.

The Corps Marshal further stated that lifting of the suspension order on the enforcement of the device, coupled with the Federal High Court’s ruling to clear the Corps for having the powers to introduce the device showed that the three arms of the government have expressed their support for the policy.

“The Corps has therefore stepped up its efforts at educating Nigerians on the need to brace-up for the new order; even though some notable transport companies have gone ahead with the initiative, in spite of the temporary lull.

“Consequently, the Corps is coming up with a new date for the commencement of the enforcement on the compulsory use of the device as soon as consultation with the relevant stakeholders is completed,” he stated.
