Speed Limiter: Alake of Egbaland promises to lead campaign in Ogun

The Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Thursday, promised to lead the Federal Government’s initiative on the introduction of speed limiters in commercial vehicles in the state.

This, according to the monarch, is to ensure that Ogun State highways are removed from the list of the most dangerous highways in the country.

The monarch gave the promise when the newly-posted Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander for Ogun State, Corps Commander Clement Oladele, paid the him a courtesy visit at his palace in Abeokuta, the state capital, to seek his royal blessings.

Condemning the incessant road traffic crashes in the state, especially along the Abeokuta – Sagamu highway, around Onipepeye, the Alake said the axis had claimed several precious lives, including that of a former Secretary to the State Government, Otunba Adegbemi Onakoya.

He also noted that a former President of the country, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, had also experienced a minor road traffic crash at the same Onipepeye along the Abeokuta –  Sagamu expressway.

The monarch however commended FRSC’s efforts in ensuring safety of road users in the country and advised the State Sector Command to erect warning signs at  Onipepeye along the Abeokuta – Sagamu highway to stem frequent road crashes along the road.

In his response , the State Sector Commander, Oladele,  assured the monarch that prompt actions would be taken towards making the State highways safer, in line with the goals of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011 -2020) as well as the Sustainable Development Goals.

Corps Commander Oladele also assured the Alake and the people of the State that the FRSC Ogun State Command under his leadership has outlined strategies that would ensure the removal of the State highways from the list of ten most dangerous highways in Nigeria.

He however noted that the ongoing advisory enforcement on speed limiters has showed than only two percent of the commercial vehicles operating in the State have so far complied with the regulation on the installation of the speed limiters. He therefore advised commercial motorists in the state to comply  before the commencement of full enforcement by  January 1, 2017.
