Senate says NO to Nigeria Customs over vehicle duties ultimatum

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday said a capital NO to the plan by the country’s Customs Service to start impounding all vehicles brought into the country without the payment of custom duties as required by law and also prosecute owners of such vehicles after the expiration of its one-month notice.

The Senate, in a resolution, which followed a motion brought by the Deputy Leader, Bala Na’Allah, stopped the Custom Service from going ahead with the plan and summoned the Customs to appear before its Committee as Senate President, Bukola Saraki, maintained that  it was the duty of the lawmakers to ensure the welfare of Nigerians.

Last week, the Nigeria Customs Service had issued a one-month notice to owners of vehicles brought into the country without custom duty payment, especially through the land borders,  to go and pay, threatening to impound such vehicles and prosecute their owners if they fail to comply at the expiration of the notice.

Nigerians had reacted sharply to the notice, describing it as an invitation to confusion and chaos.
