The South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) said on Tuesday that it is fully cooperating with the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) over the ongoing investigation into alleged dumping of imported tyres from China into the country and was only waiting for the ongoing court action to run its full course before coming out with its recommendation.
The Managing Executive, SATMC, Nduduzo Chala, stated this in a statement made available to AUTO REPORT AFRICA, saying the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) – a representative body of the four local tyre manufacturing companies in the Southern African Customs Union (“SACU”) – is taking into consideration the court application of the Tyre Importers Association of South Africa (TIASA) in respect of the current Anti-Dumping Investigation into tyres imported from China.
The statement read in parts: “The SATMC applied to the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) for an investigation, and provided evidence to support the position, that tyres imported from China at unfairly low prices are causing material injury to the local industry. The SATMC continues to cooperate with ITAC and has provided all required information to ITAC to support the investigation.
“The SATMC has received TIASA’s Notice of Motion which is currently being addressed. As the SATMC, we believe that we should respect this process.
“We, the SATMC wish to stress that the investigation that was initiated on 31 January 2022 is still ongoing. The conclusion of the preliminary phase of the investigation is awaited, thereafter a preliminary report will be published setting out ITAC’s preliminary decision. Interested parties will have 14 days from the date of publication of the preliminary report to comment in writing to ITAC.
“The ITAC investigation will then continue with its final investigation phase, during which ITAC will review all interested parties’ comments and verify the information that was submitted before issuing an Essential Facts letter. This will be followed by ITAC’s Final Determination which must be published on or before 31 July 2023.”
SATMC
The SATMC is the official industry body and trade association of the local tyre manufacturers, namely, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear and Sumitomo. It is the voice of the local tyre manufacturers and represents them on trade, economic and environmental policies, tyre sector regulations.
