RSP-SA pledges support for UN Global Road Safety Week

The Road Safety Partnership (RSP) South Africa has pledged its support for the United Nations as it marks this year’s  Global Road Safety Week from 17 to 23 May 2021. The slogan for the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week is ‘Streets for life: why #Love30.’ . The Road Safety Partnership (RSP) South Africa says the campaign is calling for 30kph speed limits to become the norm in cities, towns and villages worldwide.

“The RSP-SA South Africa is pledging their support for the initiative. Low speed limits in areas where traffic and people mix can significantly reduce the number of tragedies in these localities.

“Low speed streets save lives and should be the heart of all communities. The campaign acknowledges that not only will lives be saved but healthy and green streets can be created as well. #Love30 calls for policymakers worldwide to move towards policy  changes  that enact a change to 30kph speed limits in areas congested with traffic and people.”

The RSP-SA supports this global initiative and campaign.

“The potential change that can result from lower speed limits, in South Africa the proposed number is 40kph, can have a far-reaching and substantial effect in highly populated areas where there are vulnerable road-users. While the campaign calls for a 30kph limit, any reduction in speed limits based on policymakers’ discretion relative to needs, would be welcomed.

“We encourage other organisations and individuals to join the RSP-SA in supporting this initiative. By standing together for road safety we place more pressure on policymakers to bring about positive change on the roads,” says the RSP-SA.
