Oyeyemi relocates to Lagos over Ibadan expressway gridlock

Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, said on Thursday that he would relocate from his base in Abuja to Lagos for the weekend to personally supervise traffic re-routing on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway due to the intensity of gridlock on the road.

Lagos was practically locked down, Wednesday, as a result of the gridlock on the road due to an accident and explosion, which claimed five lives. These further compounded the problems caused by ongoing construction work on the Isheri long bridge axis of the road.

“As soon as I leave here (Abuja studio), I’m relocating to Lagos. We have to re-route traffic on that road. Today is Thursday and weekend is already here. We have to do something fast to ease the traffic,” Oyeyemi said on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme monitored in Lagos.

The Corps Marshal attributed the resurgence of gridlock on the road, Thursday morning, to the experience of Wednesday as anxious drivers of smaller vehicles, desperate to avoid the experience they had the previous day, had to start driving against traffic since the trailers which had been on standby had occupied the road.

Oyeyemi said: “The traffic on the road is understandable. This is a gateway that takes no fewer than 35,000 vehicles per hour. And the ongoing rehabilitation work is compounding the problem. The Minister of Works, Road and Housing had assured that the pains would soon be over. We are appealing to our people to be patient as the painful experience would soon be over.

“We have to re-route traffic to ease congestion on the road. The wreckage on the road and the attendant gridlock had been cleared since 1am but the trailers which had been on standby, waiting by the sides, have now taken over the road. We have to divert them to other alternate routes or ask them to standby to enable us clear the gridlock.”
