Leaders of climate, development, labour, youth, health, and racial
justice movements, Tuesday, joined global webinars ahead of the G20 finance ministers meeting.
On July 18, Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from the
world’s 20 richest countries will be meeting to build a consensus of how governments and banks will react to economic stimulus measures post COVID-19.
“There are trillions of dollars of our money on the table and we want a
say in where it goes. These decisions will have an impact on our future for decades and centuries to come,” May Boeve, Executive Director, 350.org, said .
The global webinars are being held to explore expectations from the G20 and plan for a global wave of mobilisations calling for a just recovery from COVID-19 and for the climate.
Money is already going to bail out the fossil fuel industry. More
than half a trillion dollars worldwide – $509bn (£395bn) – is to be poured into high-carbon industries, with no conditions to ensure they reduce their carbon emissions.
“The decisions made at the G20 have the potential to set the world on the path to a cross-cutting, just recovery from the compound crises of racial injustice, COVID, economic upheaval and climate breakdown that are hitting us all at once,” Tamara Toles O’Laughlin, 350.org director for
North America, explained.
The global webinars on Tuesday featured inspiring stories and amazing action ideas from activists who came together from the global climate, development, labour, youth, health and racial justice movements.
The activists include the International Trade Union Congress leader, Sharan Burrow; 350.org Executive Director May Boeve; Ugandan youth climate striker, Hilda Nakabuye; Asian Peoples’ Movement for Debt
and Development coordinator, Lidy Nacpil; CAN-International Executive Director ,Tasneem Essop, and 350’s North America Director, Tamara Toles O’Laughlin.
