Opel Astra continues to shine despite tough conditions witnessed in April, General Motors South Africa (GMSA), which recorded total sales of 3 183 units and an overall market share of 7.9 percent, has said.
April sales results released by NAAMSA show an overall total market of 40 390 for the month, a decline of 9.2% versus April 2015.
The passenger car market was down 13.2% versus last year, further evidence of the increasing pressure facing consumers. Passenger car sales of 26 077 units for the month represent the lowest monthly sales recorded in five years.
Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) fared better than passenger cars with sales of 12 192 units. LCV sales were down only 0.1% in April 2016 versus April 2015, however, the significant decline of sales in the sub-one ton segment, which is popular with small business, could be further proof of the pressure facing all sectors of the South African economy.
“Opel continues to be a shining star within the GMSA portfolio with the recently launched Astra clearly making its mark in the Compact Hatch segment. Astra which was introduced halfway through the month had its best sales performance since July 2014,” Vice President, Vehicle Sales, Service, and Marketing GM Sub-Saharan Africa, Brian Olson, said in a statement obtained by AUTO REPORT AFRICA.
Other notable performers, according to the statement, were; Isuzu KB 1 004 units, Chevrolet Utility 930 units. In addition, the enhanced Chevrolet Captiva continues to build sales momentum, with April being its best sales month this year.
