Mitsubishi: SA Market Not Affected By Fuel Consumption Debacle

The Mitsubishi Motor Corporation Wednesday announced that vehicles involved in a fuel consumption debacle regarding data released in Japan, are not for sale in South Africa.

This was stated in a statement obtained by AUTO REPORT AFRICA.

According to the statement, the fuel consumption data submitted to the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) was calculated using a different testing method resulting in more favourable consumption rates. It added that this affects four mini car models for the domestic market in Japan only.

The affected vehicles – the Mitsubishi eK-Wagon and eK-Space as well as the Dayz and Dayz Roox manufactured by MMC for the Nissan Motor Corporation – were produced and sold between June 2013 and March 2016.

Sales of these vehicles, that have only been sold in Japan, have been halted and manufacturing ceased.

MMC apologised to their customers and stakeholders when the company announced that the testing method used was different from that required by Japanese law for models manufactured for the domestic market in Japan.

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa Marketing Manager, Braam Faul, confirmed that none of these models have been sold on the local market.

“The Mitsubishi Motor Corporation announced that it will set up a committee consisting of external experts only to further investigate products manufactured for the export market, and will publish the results of the investigation as soon as it is completed,” Faul said in the statement issued on Wednesday.
