Hope rises on approval for FRSC Traffic Radio

Indications emerged on Thursday that the dream of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of having its own Traffic Radio may soon come to pass. The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Mallam Is’haq Modibo Kawu, gave the indication when he disclosed that the request by the Corps for approval of the radio station was being processed by the Corporation, even as he expressed optimism that the request will receive positive approval.

Modibo Kawu disclosed this while visiting the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi,  at the FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja.

The NBC boss opined that given the need for mass education of drivers and general road users, there was the compelling need for the FRSC to have a dedicated Traffic Radio which would play the role of education and enlightenment on safe use of the road. He, therefore, assured that his Corporation had put necessary measures in place to ensure that the process for granting the operating licence to FRSC is completed on time.

He stressed that while the licence is being processed, the NBC would provide the Corps with a platform that it could use to pass its safety messages to the target audience. He commended the FRSC for its investments in information and communication technology through which it manages the traffic and monitors the activities of its men on the road.

In his response, the Corps Marshal expressed gratitude to the Director General of the NBC for the visit, saying it demonstrates the existing relationship between the two organisations.

He restated that the need for attitudinal change of the drivers through specialised radio programmes makes it imperative that the FRSC gets its own Traffic Radio to constantly broadcast such programmes to the target audience.

He described the envisaged Traffic Radio as a necessary tool the Corps can rely upon to attain its public enlightenment goals. The Corps Marshal further noted that the increasing volume of vehicular traffic and the challenges of effective management make it imperative that drivers are constantly enlightened on road conditions and traffic status.

Oyeyemi expressed delight at the interest being shown by the NBC Management to grant the Corps the operating licence that would make it possible for the Corps to reach out to its mass audience through radio programmes. The Corps Marshal also expressed gratitude to some corporate organisations for extending logistics support to the Corps in order to facilitate the take-off of the station.

He expressed hope that more of such support would come from relevant stakeholders as soon as the radio project becomes operational.

On trauma management, the Corps Marshal disclosed that as part of the collaborative initiatives of the Corps with relevant stakeholders, it has been getting logistics support, especially in the area of staff capacity development.

The Corps Marshal noted that through such support, some selected rescue personnel from across the commands of the FRSC are currently undergoing training on trauma management at the National Hospital Abuja while more of such training are being expected within the next few weeks.

The NBC Director-General was accompanied on the visit by some principal staff of the Corporation who were taken round the FRSC Information Technology Centre.
