FRSC Pledges Support for the Physically-challenged

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi has pledged the support of the FRSC’s Management to physically-challenged persons in the country, saying there must ability in disability.

He made this known while receiving the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Disability Matters, Dr. Samuel Odeh Ankali, who came on advocacy visit to the FRSC National Headquarters Abuja.

The Corps Marshal said as the lead agency for road safety management and administration in the country, FRSC is conscious of the plight of people with disabilities.

He noted that in order to address their plight, conscious efforts were made to provide for their peculiar needs in both the Nigeria Highway Code and the National Drivers’ Licence.

Oyeyemi therefore assured the Presidential aide that as responsible public institution, the Corps will collaborate with the office to address some of the challenges facing the disabled persons in the country.

He stressed that as part of the Corps’ commitment towards serving the cause of the disabled persons, he would set up a unit under the Special Marshals and Partnership to explore ways of collaborating with the office for the good of the disabled persons.

“Mr. President has demonstrated his concern for the welfare of people with disabilities through your appointment. I wish to assure you that FRSC would join hands with the President to attain his vision for the welfare of the disabled,” he stated.

Earlier in his remarks, Odeh commended the Corps Marshal for his passion for road safety, saying through the advocacy programmes of the FRSC, there has been massive enlightenment on issues of road safety, leading to greater sanity on the nation’s highways.

“The President is happy with the good work that the FRSC is doing to save lives on the road,” he stated.

“We want to partner with the FRSC through our membership of the Special Marshals and Partnership to enable us provide the necessary enlightenment, inspiration and intelligence on road usage to the people,” he stated.

According to him, some people became disabled as a result of road traffic crashes, which have increased the population of disabled people in the country currently estimated to be 25 million.

“We are working on a plan to have a disability unit comprising of 3 to 5 individuals in every organisation to ensure that the disabled are carried along in government policies; and FRSC is a key public institution that we trust we can partner with to achieve this,” he added.

It would be recalled that the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari demonstrated his concern for the welfare of persons with disabilities by appointing a senior special assistant to the president who will coordinate the activities of the disabled persons in the country with a view to making them useful to themselves and the society.
