FRSC PARTNERS FCTA ON ROAD SAFETY MANAGEMENT

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have agreed to collaborate in strengthening road safety management and administration in the Federal Capital Territory.

The partnership agreement was the result of a recent consultative meeting between the FRSC Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi and the Permanent Secretary, FCT, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye.

Briefing the Permanent Secretary on the existing cordial relationship between the FRSC and FCT at the meeting, the Corps Marshal also identified some traffic challenges affecting free movement of traffic in the FCT, saying the Corps was committed to partnering with the FCT Administration in finding lasting solutions to the problems.

While stressing the need for the FRSC and the FCT to continue to work together for prompt removal of wrecks from the roads in the FCT, the Corps Marshal noted that there was the need to secure a location where impounded vehicles could be kept for custody pending when they would be claimed by their owners.

“The FCTA has to work out a system whereby a properly fenced location with adequate illumination, security and accessibility could be secured for keeping impounded vehicles pending when their owners would come to claim them,” he stated.

Oyeyemi pointed out that FRSC had observed cases of malfunctioning of traffic lights at some junctions within the FCT, coupled with non- synchronisation of the lights to reflect traffic directions, thus encouraging rampart cases of disobedience to traffic lights some of which result into avoidable crashes,” he added.

He also stressed the need for the FCT to construct pedestrian ways to give adequate protection to pedestrians who use the road against motorists.

He further observed that poor illumination of some of the roads within the FCT compromises safety and security and could create negative image for the country especially for visitors entering the city centre in the night from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Oyeyemi however assured that FRSC would continue to reflect some of these development challenges in its monthly reports which it shares with the FCTA in the collective determination to make the city a pride for all Nigerians.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary thanked the Corps Marshal for the visit, saying it is a welcome development that would be encouraged by the Minister of FCT, whom he said is passionate about creating orderliness in the city. He expressed confidence that the Minister will be around next time the Corps Marshal visits and noted that with regular consultations by relevant stakeholders like the FRSC some of the challenges facing the FCT could be addressed.

Ajakaiye particularly commended the FRSC for its contributions to the development of the FCT, especially in the area of traffic management and administration, noting that the FCT administration will render the necessary support that could strengthen the existing collaboration between the FRSC and the FCT.

The Permanent Secretary further pointed out that in the determination to make the collaboration with the Corps work better, the FCT Administration would avoid bureaucracy and rely more on use of technology in line with the change mantra of the present administration in the country.

The Corps Marshal was accompanied on the visit by some principal Officers of the FRSC including the Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Motor Vehicle Administration, Theophilus Charles and the Special Assistant to the Corps Marshal, Assistant Corps Marshal Julius Asom, among others. Also in attendance at the meeting were some Directors from the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory. (FRSC NEWS)
