The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigerian Armed Forces have resolved to partner on activities aimed at promoting national safety and security. The agreement was the outcome of a meeting between the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi and the Director of Defence Information, Major General John Enenche, who recently paid a courtesy visit on the Corps Marshal at the FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja.
Describing the FRSC as a digital compliant institution that can be relied upon by the Armed Forces in the search for the attainment of national security, Enenche called for improved collaboration with the FRSC for maximum benefits to the nation. While commending the FRSC for its adoption of science and technology in pursuit of its modernization process, Enenche said such vision has elevated the Corps to a level where its operations robustly support the pursuit of national security goals.
He therefore called for collaboration with the FRSC in the area of information and communication technology as well as intelligence sharing, citing the last arrest made by the FRSC in Kaduna in which a vehicle loaded with some illegal arms was impounded as one of the justifications for improved collaboration between the Corps and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“We are impressed with your contributions to the nation’s safety and security and I have come here on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff to seek for more collaboration for greater national security,” he stated.
Enenche also commended the FRSC for laying emphasis on staff capacity development as evidenced by the quality of its personnel who participate in various military courses, saying such emphasis is not misplaced. Assuring the Corps Marshal that the Armed Forces Radio will continue to feature road safety programmes to educate drivers and members of the public on safe use of the road, Enenche said: “The Programme, “Road Sense,” which emphasises on road safety education will continue to enjoy the support of the Radio Station in view of its importance to the campaign to make the nation’s road safer.”
In his remarks, the Corps Marshal expressed gratitude to the Director for his visit and commended the Armed Forces for the long-standing support they render to the FRSC either through training of its personnel and provision of slots in their training institutions. He further noted that the Armed Forces Radio has been of great support to the Corps’ activities in terms of its airing of road safety education programmes and dissemination of information on traffic status.
Oyeyemi assured his guest that FRSC will continue to partner with the Armed Forces Radio in its information dissemination to drivers and members of the general public. He added that as the second in line of defence in the nation’s security architecture, FRSC is conscious of its role as the lead agency in matters of road safety and would continue to provide necessary cooperation to all relevant agencies towards ensuring national security.
He stressed that while the Corps will sustain its commitment to the provision of safety for road travelers through preventive measures like the recently introduced speed limiters to commercial vehicles; the ultimate solution to road carnage is the adoption of the intermodal transport system to give reliefs to the pervasive use of the road. He appealed for more support from members of the Armed Forces in the area of capacity building of staff of the Corps, especially with the efforts being made to upgrade the FRSC Academy Udi and Training School Jos to degree and Diploma awarding institutions respectively.
The Corps Marshal praised the Military for being road safety-friendly and called for sustained compliance by members of the Armed Forces to traffic rules and regulations as they have been noted for.
The highlight of the visit was the exchange of souvenirs between the Corps Marshal and the visiting Director of Defence Information after the visitors were taken round the Corps’ Information Technology Centre.
