The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Lagos State Government have agreed to harmonise their traffic data as a way of stepping up collaboration and ensuring efficiency in road traffic management.
This was the outcome of the meeting between the Lagos State Commissioners for Finance, Dr. Mustapha Akinkunmi, in company of his Transportation and Tourism counterpart, Mr. Dapo Mobereola and the Corps Marshal of FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, at the FRSC National Headquarters Abuja.
The Commissioner of Finance in his remarks described the investment which the FRSC has made in technology towards ensuring efficient traffic management in the country as “massive, detailed and impressive,” saying he has not seen such a well packaged system in any public institution in the country of recent.
“We were indeed impressed with what we saw during the facility tour, and that shows the need for us to collaborate in harmonising and standardising our data for a more efficient traffic management in Lagos,” he stated.
Speaking further, he pointed out that the investment made by the FRSC towards tackling the traffic challenges of the country is in the right direction, adding that Lagos State will tap into the infrastructural base of the Corps to share the knowledge for harmonisation and standardisation of Lagos State traffic data for improved road management.
Mustapha commended the FRSC for its commitment to road safety management, pledging that Lagos state government will partners with the Corps in finding lasting solutions to the traffic challenges of the country. He assured that Lagos State will explore the possibility of tapping into the existing facilities of the FRSC for improved safety and revenue generation for Lagos State.
Speaking in same vein, the Commissioner for Transportation noted that the bane of transportation in Nigeria is data collation and its efficient application, saying with proper data sourcing and application, the traffic challenges of the country could be effectively tackled. He stressed the need for increased collaboration between the FRSC and Lagos state, stressing that with proper harmonisation of data by the various stakeholders handling traffic data, a more efficient traffic management system could be delivered to the country.
The Corps Marshal, in his remarks, acknowledged the efforts of the Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on how to improve the transportation system of the state, noting that FRSC will ensure partnership that could adequately address the chaotic traffic situation of the state.
According to him, Lagos State accounts for the highest volume of vehicular traffic in the country, and FRSC is committed to partnering with to find enduring solutions to its traffic challenges.
Oyeyemi expressed optimism that if the traffic challenges of Lagos can be efficiently tackled, it would be a walkover in other states of the country.
Among those that accompanied the Commissioners on the visit were some senior officers of the Ministries including the Chairman of Lagos State Internal Revenue Board.
