Frankfurt Airport logged just under 3.7 million passengers in January, marking a year-on-year rise of 65.5%, the operator Fraport said on Monday.
Following the usual post-holiday pattern, traffic was lower than the almost 4 million in the previous month of December.
Compared to the January 2019 levels before the pandemic, the shortfall was 21.3%. In December, however, passenger traffic had been only 18.4% lower than the same month in 2019.
The number of passengers travelling through Germany’s busiest airport nearly doubled to about 48.9 million in 2022.
But the hub still remained below the record level of more than 70 million passengers from 2019.
In the cargo business, Frankfurt Airport recorded a significant decline in January. It handled 138,457 tons of cargo and airmail, 19.4% less than in the same period last year.
