FG Approves Optional 3, 5-Year Validity Period for Drivers Licence

The Federal Government has approved an optional validity period of three and five years, respectively, for the Nigerian drivers licence.

The approval, which extends the hitherto three-year validity period to five years , was given by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) at its 134th meeting held two weeks ago in Kano.

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, who disclosed this at a media briefing in Lagos on Saturday, said the Corps, also promised at the JTB meeting, to make available vehicle Number Plates to States within five working days of receiving request.

Oyeyemi stressed that while the optional validity period for the drivers licence which comes with different costs is to provide more efficient and effective service delivery to the Nigerian driving public, the plan to make vehicle Number Plates to states within five working days is to ensure the availability of the Number Plates at all times.

He described last week’s approval by the National Economic Council (NEC) of the 2014-2018 Nigerian Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) as a landmark achievement, saying it shows the commitment of the Federal Government to the issues of road safety in Nigeria.

The Corps Marshal also described the approval at the NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as a success story, saying Nigeria now has an official document on Road Safety management.
