Egypt appears set to revive a stalled legislation, tagged the Automotive Directive, aimed at encouraging local assemblers to move further up the value chain into manufacturing, according to a report by Enterprise, an Egyptian online business platform.
The report, which also quoted Youm7, said the country’s Trade Minister Tarek Kabil, who disclosed this at a media briefing last week, said the Trade and Industry Ministry was set to engage the services of a German consultant to help revive the Automotive Directive in order to help in growing Egypt’s auto industry. The legislation, according to Enterprise, had been stalled for several months as a result of opposition from car importers and the EU. It is believed that the German consultant whose identity has not been revealed will be able to assist the Egyptian Government in resolving the gray areas preventing the legislation from seeing the light of the day.
