Donald Trump appoints Nigerian, Ogunlesi, to Economic Advisory Team

A Nigerian, Adebayo Ogunlesi, has been appointed to serve in a special economic advisory team constituted on Friday by the United States President-elect, Donald Trump.

Fifty-seven-year-old Ogunlesi, who is the chairman and managing partner, Global Infrastructure Partners , a New York – based  independent investment fund with worldwide stake in infrastructure assets, is also the owner of Gatwick Airport in London. He would be joining other American captains of industry and business leaders such as the CEOs from Disney, JPMorgan, General Motors, and BlackRock in the Strategic and Policy Forum that will advise Trump on how to institute policies to encourage job growth and improve productivity.

The Forum, which would have its inaugural meeting in the first week of February, is to be headed by Steve Schwarzman, the CEO of Blackstone, an American private-equity giant.

Ogunlesi’s appointment is contained in a statement issued Friday by Blackstone, announcing its CEO, Schwarzian, as head of the group.

The statement said: “President-elect Donald J. Trump today announced that he is establishing the President’s Strategic and Policy Forum.

“The Forum, which is composed of some of America’s most highly respected and successful business leaders, will be called upon to meet with the president frequently to share their specific experience and knowledge as the president implements his plan to bring back jobs and Make America Great Again,”

The statement listed the members of the group as : Stephen Schwarzman (forum chairman), chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Blackstone; Paul Atkins, CEO of Patomak Global Partners, former commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission; Mary Barra, chairwoman and CEO, General Motors; Toby Cosgrove, CEO, Cleveland Clinic; Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO, JPMorgan Chase & Co.; Larry Fink, chairman and CEO, BlackRock; Bob Iger, chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company.

Others are  Rich Lesser, president and CEO, Boston Consulting Group; Doug McMillon, president and CEO, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.; Jim McNerney, former chairman, president, and CEO of Boeing; Adebayo “Bayo” Ogunlesi, chairman and managing partner, Global Infrastructure Partners;  Ginni Rometty, chairwoman, president, and CEO of IBM; Kevin Warsh, Shepard Family Distinguished Visiting Fellow in economics at the Hoover Institute, former member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System; Mark Weinberger, global chairman and CEO, EY; Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO, General Electric; and Daniel Yergin, Pulitzer Prize winner, vice chairman of IHS Markit.

Ogunlesi has lived in the U.S. for more that 21 years and is the son of the first Nigerian-born medical professor. He had his secondary school education at King’s College, Lagos and went ahead to study philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford. He later earned law and business degrees from Harvard.  A member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, Ogunlesi was also a lecturer at Harvard Law School and the Yale School.
