Toyota is rolling out the drums today to kick-start a series of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of its reliable light commercial truck, the Hilux, flaunted as a “Reliable Partner.” Already, a special website has been opened for the golden anniversary of the truck that was “Born Tough.” The website, which has both Japanese and English versions, will among others, tell the story of the Hilux from its first to the eighth generation.
Conceived by Toyota as a joint successor model integrating the Briska with the Light Stout, the Hilux made a debut in March 1968 as a new bonnet-type truck with Hino Motors, Ltd., in charge of development and production.
The Hilux has its roots in the truck format, and the starting point of its development to date has been an emphasis on its toughness as a workhorse whose practical utility makes it ideally suited as a commercial vehicle.
