German carmaker Audi has acquired a minority stake in the Sauber Group, the Swiss motorsport engineering company said on Monday.
Sauber currently race in Formula One under the Alfa Romeo title sponsor, while Audi is to compete as a factory team from 2026, with the Volkswagen subsidiary developing the engine and the chassis being built by Sauber.
“This is an important milestone on the way to Audi’s entry in Formula One, scheduled for 2026, for which the Sauber Group will be the German brand’s strategic partner,” Sauber said in a statement.
According to media reports, Audi will gradually buy stakes in the Sauber Group until it reaches 75%.
Audi announced their plans to join F1 last year as new technical regulations from 2026 will see cars just as powerful but using less energy and producing net zero carbon exhaust emissions.
