2020 Mitsubishi Outlander comes with fresh, modern and stylish look

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) has launched the 2020 Outlander into  the local market. The 2020 Outlander is the third of various new model launches for the company in the first quarter of the new year.

Originally launched in South Africa in September 2003, the new Outlander now has a fresh, modern and stylish look, many new features and a host of visual improvements all over.

This 7-seater family SUV comes standard with a high level of equipment, powerful 2.4-litre petrol engine and an automatic 6-step CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) offering a highly satisfying sensation of “shifting gears”.

The new Outlander also boasts Mitsubishi Motors’ unique S-AWC (Super All-wheel Control) offering dynamic handling and providing ultimate safety for the driver and passengers.

“Our third new model for the year after the introduction of the 2020 Mitsubishi ASX and exhilarating all-new 1.5-litre petrol turbo-charged Eclipse Cross now has a similar, more attractive and stylish appearance front and back as well as a variety of improvements to the interior, including a host of new interior features such as electric lumbar support and seat warmers for the front seats as well as an Electric Park Brake with Auto-Hold,” Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA), said.

“Most of the changes can be found inside while the latest version of the Outlander offers a redesigned Dynamic Shield front with a new front bumper and radiator grille, a new look for its alloy wheels and a new rear bumper.

“The best news is that MMSA has managed to introduce the new Outlander at just under R500 000.”

According to Campbell, “The spacious new Outlander is priced at R499 995 and complements the rest of the Mitsubishi range we offer, with the best balance in looks, design, technology and price.”

Outside

First impressions are lasting impressions, and the new Outlander will keep heads turning thanks to its stylish good looks.

With its distinctive redesigned front grille, new-look alloy wheels and stylish shape, the Outlander’s contemporary overall design speaks of style and practicality, offering outstanding comfort for families in the urban environment as well as on the open road and out in nature.

The changes to the 2020 model are much more than a fresh and attractive new look – it offers adventure-minded buyers great value for money at a lower price.

Seen from the front, the bold new grille has a modern edge, complementing the new front bumper which distinguishes the new model from its predecessor. From the side the new alloy wheels offer another visual change, while the new rear bumper highlights the crisp and stylish design of the latest Outlander.

Standard features include dusk-sensing headlamps that automatically switch on when visibility drops.

The electric tailgate, which automatically opens and closes at the touch of a button, is just one of the many convenience features that are part of the Outlander’s DNA, making loading and unloading of luggage or shopping bags so much easier.

Interior

Boasting 7 seats and designed for versatility and flexibility, the roomy interior offers a new feature in the rear – new storage space for the tonneau cover behind the 3rd row of passenger seats when it is not in use.

The enhanced interior with its new features for the driver is designed to provide maximum comfort and postural support. Drivers can now adjust and tailor their perfect seating position with both power and manual controls as well as new dual zone air-conditioning with rear vents.

The driver also benefits from advanced features such as the new Electric Parking Brake with Auto-Hold – a very handy feature on inclines, especially in tight parking spots.

Built for comfort and convenience, the Outlander also comes fully equipped with Climate Control and a new Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA), which includes Bluetooth and Handsfree Voice Control integrated into the Multi-function Leather Steering Wheel.

The biggest visual difference is found in the centre of the front console housing the cabin controls – Mitsubishi Motor’s improved new Smartphone-link Display Audio system.

The SDA boasts a new 8″ WVGA full-colour display with touch controls as well as USB power supply for your mobile phone. The system also has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with extra features to mirror your smart device. With this feature you can get directions, make and receive calls, send and receive messages and listen to your favourite downloaded music. Most importantly, you can do all of this without fumbling around with your full attention staying focused on the road.

Other new interior features include a variety of stylish additions, such as upgraded leather seats, new trim on the dashboard and door panels, auto up and down electric windows all around, additional storage for the rear passengers who now also have their own USB plugs for keeping their smart devices fully charged, and a single door-locking/unlocking function for additional safety.

Both the second row and third row seats can be easily re-arranged (60:40 split and folding function with slide and recline adjustments for the 2nd row; 50:50 folding function for the 3rd row).

As your needs grow and shrink, expand and contract, you can even fold down all the rear seats to create a large, flat luggage area for flexibility that allow you more room for the things you love. This offers flexible and functional cargo space that fits kids, kayaks and everything in-between – a customisable cargo space to keep you moving at the pace you set.

A Rear-View Camera with Park Distance Control makes parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces or on an adventure outing an absolute breeze.

Electronic sensors for the windscreen wipers and headlights, a keyless operating system and electric power steering with a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column are standard, offering a stylish interior that is truly comfortable and luxurious.

Performance

The Outlander uses the latest version of the 2.4L MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control) DOHC 16-valve engine with ECI Multi-point fuel injection offering 123 kW at 6 000 rpm and 222 Nm of torque at 4 100 rpm, balancing maximum power input with efficient fuel consumption for an ultra-smooth drive.

This powerful yet fuel-efficient engine (8,2L/100 km in the combined on-road cycle) is coupled with Mitsubishi Motors’ proven INVECS-III automatic CVT with a 6-step shift mode, as well as the company’s unique Super All-Wheel Control System (S-AWC).

The S-AWC combines several advanced technologies to give maximum traction on any type of road, assisting the driver to safely manoeuvre the vehicle in any kind of weather and on any surface. This innovative electronically controlled AWD system uses intuitive sensors to maximise vehicle control, distributing power to all four wheels, while four driving modes balance economy and performance.

S-AWC offers massive safety by applying optimal torque to the rear wheels for enhanced traction, stability and control.

It integrates with Active Yaw Control (AYC), which uses braking to distribute torque to the left and right. Even when you brake or accelerate too hard, you maintain control without extra steering effort.

The driver can also choose ECO or NORMAL for city roads and highway driving, or SNOW or GRAVEL mode depending on road conditions for full control on slippery surfaces.

Safety

For Mitsubishi Motors, nothing is more important than occupant safety, starting with Super All-wheel Control which is the DNA of this SUV’s safety.

Other safety features found in the complete modern fleet of Mitsubishi products and the Outlander include Automatic Stability and Traction Control (ASTC), an important safety feature in rain and on gravel roads whilst working with S-AWC to provide maximum safety and driver control.

Another new safety feature in the new Outlander is the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto-Hold which prevents the vehicle from rolling back on an incline.

The latest Outlander retains its array of advanced passive and active safety technology. This includes a 7-airbag system for increased safety for every seat, while Mitsubishi’s advanced RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) Body Construction utilises crumple zones that route and absorb energy during high-impact collisions. This leads to improved safety for all occupants, regardless of impact direction.

Side Impact Protection Bars in the doors add to the vehicle’s impressive passive safety features which include ISOFIX child seat anchors and Hill Start Assist allowing the driver to take off at an incline without the vehicle rolling back.

The new Outlander also boasts a touch-to-operate keyless Smart Key System that takes care of fumbling for your car keys with your hands full. It works within a 70 cm radius from the vehicle for easy locking and unlocking, including the electric tail gate, and once behind the wheel, the driver can start the engine with the touch of a button.

Warranty and service:

The Mitsubishi Outlander is covered by the original Mitsubishi Motors’ Manufacturer’s Warranty of 3 years or 100 000km, a 5-year/ 90 000 km Service Plan and a 5-year/unlimited mileage Roadside Assistance. Service intervals are scheduled at every 15 000 km or once a year.
