FG, Lagos Agree to Demolish Jibowu, Costain Bridges for New Lagos-Ibadan Rail Line

The Federal Government has finally reached an agreement with the Lagos State Government to pull down the popular Jibowu and Costain bridges in the mainland area of Lagos in order to make way for the new Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line scheduled to be completed in December 2018.

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed this Tuesday while speaking at the the end of the year news briefing and inspection of Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line in Papalanto, Ogun State, saying the right of way for the project has also been obtained.

The Lagos State Government had earlier opposed the plan for the demolition of the two bridges, saying other options should be explored. But the two parties have finally resolved to bring down the bridges.

“There is no way you can do construction without challenges in different forms and kinds and you have to address them.

“The challenges are not even here in Ogun, they are worse in Lagos. We are dealing with water, drainage, gas, power and the military.

“The only thing we are dealing with here is just gas and a few power transmission lines and we can manage it.

“I was on a tour with the Governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, and we have agreed that the two bridges will come down, our target is 2018 December,” Amaechi said.

The minister said he was impressed with the level of ongoing construction work, stating that the contractors were facing some challenges slowing the pace of work. He disclosed that  two locomotives and 10 coaches had arrived the country which the President will commission this December.
