Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa last week concluded their 2017 Breakfast Series with a rugby-themed breakfast at the  Mercedes-Benz Century City dealership  – the final breakfast for the year, in its series of six.

Guests on the main panel featured Matt Pearce, MC & Sports broadcaster; Morné du Plessis, Former Springbok Captain & Laureus SA Chairman; Jean de Villiers, Former Springbok Captain & Laureus Ambassador; Grant Nisbett: Sky New Zealand Rugby Commentator; and Tony Johnson, Sky New Zealand Rugby Commentator.

The development panel included Tonderai Chavhanga, Former Springbok player; Johan Schlebusch, CoolPlay Trust; Tania Majavie, Zip Zap Circus School & Desiree Ellis, Former Banyana Banyana Captain and current Banyana Banyana interim coach. The breakfast provided a platform for an interactive discussion on the growth and the inspirational work that the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation undertakes in communities where they are active.

“It is amazing to see the growth of the foundation since its inception in South Africa. With 200 and more projects all over the world and 26 being in South Africa, it is very humbling to see the work that has been done,” exclaimed Laureus Sports for Good Foundation Trustee, Iain Banner.

Last Wednesday, the Springboks hosted Laureus and two of its funded projects, the Zip Zap Circus School and Boxgirls South Africa at The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum. The kids from the projects got an opportunity to engage with the Springbok team and participate in various community-building sporting activities.

“It was such a fantastic experience to spend time with some of the Springbok players and the kids at the projects. The participation of the kids is of the utmost importance because it teaches them life skills. It is amazing to see the wonderful impact that the projects have on these kids’ lives. That makes me very proud to be associated with the Laureus Foundation,” former Springbok Captain & Laureus Ambassador, Jean de Villiers, said.

The year 2017 marks the third consecutive year of this breakfast series. The breakfasts brought together seasoned sporting personalities who unpacked the power of sport and its ability to create change in South Africa. MBSA is a proud country patron of Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in South Africa and the 26 community-based sports programmes that the Laureus Foundation supports in the country. The company also contributes to the Laureus Youth Empowerment through Sport (YES) programme as education and youth development is a central pillar in its Corporate Social Responsibility focus. The success of the YES programme is evident in the calibre of leaders it has produced over the years.

“I think we can all agree with the notion that sport is a key nation-building tool. Sports brings people from different walks of life, different races, cultures and ethnicity together. It is all about passion. It is also the passion for sport and for making a change through sport that has brought us together with Laureus in a very fitting partnership. We continue to make a lasting contribution in the development of the youth of South Africa through sport; supporting positive social change in the communities where Laureus is active,” Manager, Corporate Affairs: Production, Feliciano Janneker, explained.
